The Port

Erquy became an important fishing port following the discovery of clam banks in the early 1950s and of scallop banks in 1962. Since then it has been rated one of the most important scallop ports in Europe.

At the core of economic activity

Erquy's fishing port lives in rhythm with the tides. The versatility of the skilled local fishermen, (who run trawlers, spider crab or fish nets, lobster and cuttlefish pots, scallop and clam dredgers) ensures the port is busy all year round.

The inshore fleet is still the largest (73 trawlers) and deep sea fishing is growing, with steadily improving results supporting other local fishing-related industries: auction, wholesalers, processors.
The fish and shellfish landed at Erquy are known for their freshness (caught at night, landed immediately, sold and shipped) and diversity (over 60 species, including: sole, turbot, brill, bass, John Dory, lobster, spider crab, cuttlefish, clams and scallops…).
In 2008, more than 9,000 tonnes of fish and shellfish passed through the auction (including 2,500 tonnes of scallops).

The fish marketunloads the fish, sorts it, weighs it, sells it through its computer auction and ensures invoicing and payment. However, fish is not sold to individual customers.

Scallop fishing

Scallop fishing takes place between October and April. It is highly regulated to protect stocks: 2 days' fishing a week for 45 minutes a day. It stops prior to the development of the coral (reproductive organ): it is the delicate flavour of the white part you will enjoy with an "Erquy scallop".

The 60 boats line up at the quay to land their catches; each one lands an average of 600 kg from each session.
The auction generally takes place 4 hours after fishing, simultaneously in the 4 ports on the Côtes d'Armor. It is completed in record time as it is fully computerised.

Scallop fishing is a major economic asset for the area; it provides a living for two hundred families around Saint Brieuc Bay.

Yachting

Part of the harbour is set aside for yachts. Eight moorings are for visitors. It is an overwintering port. Position 2°28'W, 48°38'N. There is also a marina at Les Hôpitaux.

The new Port

The 90m long pier that was built in the 1970's has been destroyed and the materials have been used to build the new pier, 153 m westward. It is due to be finished in June 2010 and it will then be 450 metres long.

The Port Festivals

Festivals take place in summer, on some Sunday afternoons. It is then possible to have lunch or a snack at the port, and board old traditional sailing ships or fishing boats for a short sea excursion.
The dates are mentionned on the complete programme of the summer season.
